Geography large companies must take a minimum of 11 geography courses in accordance with the following principles:

Basic courses

(4 courses for bachelors, 2 courses for masters)

Core courses highlight the basic geographic concepts of over four different areas of study. Core courses are designed to build a foundation for understanding earth, space, and place in a physical and human context. We strongly recommend that you take core courses at the beginning of your program, not only because it will give you a deeper understanding of the various fields of study in geography, but also because core courses are often prerequisites for level 200 courses. Majors must select at least one course from each of the following four main areas:

• Nature and Society: Analyzes the ways that human societies have used, forms and constructed character; The impact of society, economy and culture on ecological systems; and the social and environmental implications of interactions.

• Globalization, Cities and Development: Considers the ways that the space and form of location of economic, socio-political and cultural life; ways that economic, socio-political and cultural factors, forms of space and location; and the relationship between these processes and the dynamics of urban life.

• Earth Science System: Considers how the Earth system (ecosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and) naturally functions, how these systems interact with each other, and how they affect humans.

• Geoinformatics: Considers the acquisition, analysis and transfer of geographic information; Principles and techniques are important in the fields of cartography, remote sensing, geographic information systems and spatial analysis.

Several 000- and 100-level courses are offered each year as core courses. In special cases, a level 200 course can be used to fulfill the requirements of the main course, subject to the approval of the advisor.

Specialization Courses

(4 Bachelor's Courses, 3 Master's Courses)

Specialization courses are a collection of courses that form a single combination (a collaborative effort between you and the consultant), as indicated by the signature of the advisor on the worksheet and training plan. Specialization courses give you the opportunity to explore a specific subject area in depth. Majors are required to take four specialization courses, three of which must be at level 200 and one of which can be at either level 100 or 200.

Specialization courses must be either offered by the Department of Geography or offered by other departments with the attribute of geography. An attribute is a characteristic that the registrar uses to make the course appear on course listings for the assigned department.

We recommend but do not require you to take the four core courses and the Research Methods course before taking the Specialization courses, as the Specialization courses apply skills in research and problem solving. The Geography Department allows students to undertake an internship on credit, which can count as a specialized level 200 course, subject to the approval of an advisor.

Course Skills

(1 course for bachelors, 1 course for masters)

Skills courses empower you to acquire and apply research, literacy, numeracy and display skills to generate and interpret knowledge. Our goal is for students to become critical thinkers and have an understanding of how knowledge is created. The skills course must be approved by the advisor, indicated by the signature on the sheet and the curriculum for the specialties. Skills courses must be either offered by the Department of Geography or offered by other departments with the attribute of geography.

Research Methods

(Required for Bachelors, not required for Masters)

Geography 141 The design of studies and methods in geography is essential for the main stage. We recommend that you complete this course before taking the 200 level courses in geography, preferably in your second year of study (especially if you plan to study abroad). Research methods are offered at least once a year.

Comparable courses in other departments can be exchanged for a course in Geography Research Methods with the approval of the advisor. However, this does not diminish the total number of geography courses required for basic. Thus, large companies for which a substitution has been granted will need to take an additional geography course to ensure that a total of 11 geography courses are accepted.

Key stage

(Mandatory for bachelors, not required for masters)

One exam is required for the main course. In order to meet the exam requirements, the student must have earned a level 200 credit that relates to the student's specialization, which includes at least one of the following:

1. Graduate level course as specified in 200/300 level

2 combined state Human Environment of the Regional Observatory (HERO) or Forest Ecology Research Laboratory (FERL) or Polaris

3. Directed research with a faculty advisor

4. Internships

5. Honoring a thesis

6. Public presentations, including teaching presentations

7. Research experience

The student's advisor is the judge to determine whether any particular credit criteria meets the diploma. The advisor will make a judgment based on the goal of the keynote that for the student to integrate content and skills in geography, as applied to a particular topic. The student must obtain Advisors' authorization on the Capstone form at the back of this manual and then deliver the form to the assistant's curriculum prior to starting qualifying activities and prior to enrolling for 200-level credit. At the end of the Capstone credit, the student must obtain on the Capstone form the approval of the professor who is awarding with the Capstone credits, and then submit the form to the undergraduate program assistant.

Double Bachelors

All large companies must complete 11 Geography according to the plan outlined in this guide, even if they have a second major one. Two loans for most of them can be counted simultaneously for the first and the second main. University rules that dictate the Dual Bachelor's system in the Blue Book of the University.

Minor

Geography requirements minors should track them using the spreadsheet supplied at the back of this guide. Geography minor requires seven courses in geography. The seven courses for a minor should be distributed among the following components:

Two core courses: Core courses highlighting basic geographic concepts and ways of creating knowledge; courses at the core are designed to build a framework for understanding the world. The two main courses must be chosen from different key areas. There are four main areas:

1. Nature and society

2. Globalization, cities and their development

3. The system of earth science

4. Geoinformatics

One Course Skills: Geography minor requires one skills in a geography course appropriate to the student's field of specialization. Study Methods Course Geography can count as a skills course for a minor.

Three specialization courses: Two specialized courses must be at level 200 and one can be at level 100 or 200.

One Elective Geography Course: Geography Minor requires a seventh course, which can be taken at any level.

Transfer Students

Contact the Chair of the Committee as soon as possible to see if you can count transfer credits to your Clark University program geography.

Advances in geography

The Honors in Geography program gives the ADVANCED student the opportunity to undertake a major research project. In order to graduate with honors, the student must complete with honors a two semester project conducted under the supervision of two faculty members: an excellent supervisor, who must be a member of geography, and a reader with honors, who does not need to be a member of geography. Completion of the project honors will be recognized on the start date. Students are encouraged to complete a project with honors during the spring semester of the junior year and the fall semester of the senior year. Alternatively, students can complete an honors project in the last two semesters. The Honors Geography is open to juniors who, by the end of the first semester of their junior year, have a minimum GPA of 3.25 overall and 3.

The honors thesis allows the student to explore a topic in considerable depth, because it is a two semester commitment, and often includes research over the past summer. The project must make an original contribution to geographical knowledge. In developing a research project and a thesis for honors, the student works closely with the honors supervisor and the honors reader, who will serve on the student's honors committee. In consultation with supervisor honors and reader honors, the student will shape the research paper and dissertation, including length and format, in accordance with university guidelines. In addition to writing a thesis, the student is required to make a presentation at Academic Spree Day and is invited to submit research at the Association of American Geographers meeting.

• The Undergraduate Program Coordinator sends eligibility requirements and program information to all juniors in November each year.

• Students wishing to start their project with honors in the spring junior semester must send a request to the undergraduate program coordinator prior to the first day of class in that spring semester. Those students wishing to start their project with honors in the fall semester of their senior year must send a request to the undergraduate program coordinator prior to the last day of exams in the previous spring semester.

• Honors students register for GEOG297 Directed Research (Honors), or first in a group for two semesters.

Geography and Interdisciplinary Programs at Clark

• Urban and Social Change (UDSC)

Urban Development and Concentration of Social Change provides students with a major in any field with a structured curriculum that enables them to understand the historical, social, economic, and political factors that have shaped American cities and how cities, in turn, influenced the lives of their inhabitants.

• International Stream Studies (ICS)

International Stream Studies is an innovative option within the Clarke Liberal Arts program that offers students the opportunity to structure their broad liberal arts education by focusing on international topics and issues.

• Earth Science System (ESS)

The Earth Science System is a key environmental science for undergraduates. She studies the structure and function of parts of the Earth (geosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere and atmosphere), and how they intersect to create the biosphere. Many of his courses are offered by the Faculty of Geography.

Internships

Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the internship opportunities. Please contact the program coordinator or Undergraduate Career Services to inquire about possible opportunities. If students meet the internship requirements to count as academic credit at Clark University, then the internship can count as a specialized course or internship at large companies, subject to the approval of the advisor.

Studying abroad

The department encourages students to spend at least one semester of study abroad, which is an additional reason to consult with your advisor at the start of your geography program.
